Clemson/Pitt/UTK/VT Graduate/Post Graduate SIAM Student Conference 2009

On Saturday, 21 February 2009, ICAM will host a conference for graduate students and post docs in applied mathematics and related areas. We expect speakers from Clemson University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Tennessee/Knoxville, and Virginia Tech.

The conference is sponsored jointly by the SIAM Student Chapter at Virginia Tech, by the Virginia Tech Mathematics Department, and by the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM).

The conference will be held at the Wright House, where ICAM is headquartered. This building is on West Campus Drive, between Davidson Hall (the Chemistry building) and the Duck Pond.

In part, the conference is intended as a "practice session" for the graduate students, to give them a comfortable forum in which to present the results of their research, while getting advice and suggestions from their peers and mentors. This kind of oral presentation is a vital part of a graduate student's career. The talks presented at this conference will be developed further for presentation at conferences and job interviews.

The conference is also intended to be an opportunity for the graduate students to gain exposure for their own work, to get an idea of what other students are working on, and to meet and be advised by some researchers in their field of interest.

The tentative schedule for the conference is:

RANDOM VISITORS: I have listed below the names of everyone that I think will be participating (that is, speaking, or proudly watching an advisee). But there is no fee to attend, there is no registration necessary, and no requirement or expectation that a visitor stay for more than one session. The ICAM classroom has limited seating, so if you are sure you're going to drop in, it would be helpful for our planning if you sent a brief email to John Burkardt.

Here is a program of events.

If you want more information about a talk, refer to the abstracts.

Some speakers have provided their slides (PDF or PowerPoint) in advance.

Here are some pictures from the conference.

There is a separate page about Blacksburg hotels.

There is a separate page about parking, wireless, coffee, eating, and other incidentals.

Before AND after your talk, you may want to review Bill Layton's article "How to give a 20 minute talk".

Funding and support for the colloquium talk was supplied by Peter Haskell, the chair of the Mathematics Department. Funding and support for this conference was supplied by Terry Herdman, the director of ICAM. We are all thankful for their gracious support!

Jeff Borggaard and Lizette Zietsmann assisted with this workshop in many ways, including installing the overhead projector (finally!), arranging for coffee and snacks, and taking pictures of the speakers for our records. We all owe them much thanks!
