Undergraduate Studies at SCS
Although we do not yet have a formal major, undergraduate education is an important component of the SCS educational mission. Several of our graduate-level courses are also offered at the 4000 level for advanced undergraduates. In addition, numerous opportunities exist for undergraduate participation in research. Many of the undergraduate researchers working with SCS faculty have co-authored scientific publications and/or presented papers at regional and national meetings.
The SCS is also the home of the university-wide Undergraduate Program in Mathematical and Computational Biology funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and directed by SCS professor David Swofford. This program has supported the development of new courses in bioinformatics, programming skills for computational biology, and mathematical modeling in biology. Each year, 12 undergraduate students are selected to participate as "Hughes Fellows." These fellowships provide stipends enabling the students to conduct research during the summer preceding their senior year, and to continue their research and coursework during the following fall and spring semesters.
Undergraduate students interested in computational science are encouraged to contact SCS faculty directly about potential research opportunities. More information about the research interests of our faculty are available at http://www.scs.fsu.edu/ResearchAreas.php.
