VPN Installation Instructions (Windows)

Configuring Cisco VPN Client

  1. Download the Cisco VPN Client from FSU's User Services and follow their instructions to install the software. (Note: Your FSU login/password is required for the download.) Return to this page to configure the client.

*NOTE:* Following User Service's instructions for configuring the client will connect you to the FSU VPN, which is a different network than the SCS VPN. The instructions in this document describe how to connect to the SCS VPN.
  2. Download the connection profile for the SCS VPN to your local computer (right click on the link below and "Save Link As..."). Remember the location that you chose to save the file—it will be required later.

  3. Start Cisco's VPN Client and click the Import button.

  5. Use the import dialogue to navigate to the location where you saved the SCS VPN connection profile in step 2. Select scs_vpn.pcf and click Open.

  7. Finally, to connect to the SCS VPN, select scs_vpn in the Connection Entry section, then click the Connect button. The User Authentication dialogue will prompt for a username and password. This is the username and password of your SCS account.

Once you are succesfully connected to the VPN, you can map a drive to your home directory as described below.

Connecting to Your Home Directory - Windows XP Professional

  • Click on the icon for "My Computer".

  • Select "Tools" from the menu bar.

  • From the drop-down menu that opens, select "Map Network Drive".

  • Select the drive letter you wish to use.

  • In the area to the right of "Folder", type the complete server address and your username: \\fs.scs.fsu.edu\myusername

  • Click on "Finish"

  • You may be prompted for your username/password, and then the connection should complete.

  • You should be able to see your home directory as a mapped network drive.

Connecting to Your Home Directory - Windows XP Home

  • From the Start Menu, select Run...

  • In the Open: field type cmd, then click OK

  • The command line box will open and display a prompt: C:\Documents and Settings\Username>

  • At the prompt, type: C:\Documents and Settings\Username> NET USE U: \\fs.scs.fsu.edu\myusername * /USER:CSIT\myusername

  • Enter your password when prompted. This command will set up the "U:" drive as your SCS home directory, just as it is at SCS.

For additional assistance, contact TSG via email (ops@csit.fsu.edu) or submit a Work Ticket via the Trouble Ticket component of EGroupware, and a member of TSG will contact you.
