Classroom Hardware

  • 18 Optiplex GX270 Dell Intel Pentium 4's, with 2.8Ghz CPU, 512 Mb RAM, running Cent OS 5.0. These machines have Dell 1800 Flat Panel Monitors. For more information, click on the Information sheet.
  • One Instructor's station, a Optiplex GX270 Dell Intel Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz CPU, 512 Mb RAM, running Cent OS 5.0. There is a 2-port switch here already set up in the "normal mode".
    • Port #1 is attached to a fixed station. Do not change this setting.
    • Port #2 switch connects to the monitor, keyboard and mouse. The connection currently is set for a machine with a USB port. If you do not have that, then there is another cable available - please request this 24 hours in advance of use.
  • A Sharp PG-C45X Projector (User Manual)
    • There are two inputs for the projector - One at the Instructor's station
      • Note: The resolution of this station is set to 1024 x 768 - so as to fit the screen. Do not change the settings.
    • One at the Elmo station
    • There is a third input, which is not connected but could be used for a VCR in the future

  • An Elmo Visual Presenter (HV-7000SX)

    • Instructions: Turn on the grey "On" switch and place whatever you wish to display on the bed. When looking at a non-transparent object on the Elmo, use the "upper" light. When displaying a transparency, use the "base" light.
  • An HP LaserJet 1300n printer. This black and white printer prints 20 ppm, at a 1200dpi resolution.
    • Printer Information
    • Two methods of printing to this printer,
      • the simplest is to add the following command to their .cshrc file: setenv PRINTER pr152
      • or, use the following print command each time you wish to print lpr -Ppr152 file.name
    • The front wall of the classroom is a "whiteboard". To the immediate right of the Instructor's station is a small specially treated whiteboard. DO NOT clean with any cleaners. User the eraser only!

Software on SCS Classroom Computers

For software in SCS, go to this link

  • The computers are running Cent OS 5.
  • Open MPI/gcc/g++/f77/gfortran/cmake/ccmake/java 1.6
  • COMSOL
  • tecplot, 10 concurrent licenses
  • Mathematica, 8 concurrent licenses
  • Maple
  • Matlab, classroom licenses are restricted to use in on-campus instructional labs used solely for classroom instruction of students. Course instructors are granted the right to use a copy of the software for course preparation only.
  • vmplayer
  • Amira only works remotely, performance is poor
  • Acrobat reader not available, use kpdf instead

Using CD-ROM or USB-Storage Devices on SCS Classroom Machines

  • Mounting CD-ROMs
    • CD/DVD should be mounted automatically
    • /media/cd-label
    • If manual mount is necessary, mount /dev/hdc /mount-point

  • Mounting USB Storage Device
    • USB should also be mounted automatically
    • Note: not all USB keys are recognizable by the system
    • /media/usb-label
    • When manual mount is needed, mount /dev/sdb1 /mount-point

Starting Windows on SCS Classroom Machines

  • Open terminal session
    • Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal

  • In the terminal window type: vmplayer&

  • Select 'Classroom User' (SCSUser requires password)
    • When virtual machine is used for the first time, it will be busy updating patches. The system will appear to be very slow. The speed will improve clearly after updates.

  • Right click on "My Computer" and select "Map Network"

  • Map "Z" to \\fs.scs.fsu.edu\username
    • Enter your SCS username and password when prompted

Logging Out of SCS Classroom Workstations

  • Do NOT turn off monitor or PC
