Webmail (IMP)
IMP (Internet Messaging Program) is a web-based e-mail client provided by the School of Computational Science (SCS) in order to provide SCS email account holders with an alternative method of reading and sending their e-mail, using a standard browser such as Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
The main purpose of a web-based email interface is to allow you to access your SCS email from anywhere -- your office, your home or even an Internet Café -- from any computer that has Internet access and a web browser.
BEFORE YOU START
To enable you to use this system, you must have the following information before you can continue:
- your SCS userid
- your SCS password
LOGIN INSTRUCTIONS
- open a browser on a PC with Internet access
- from the location box, enter http://email.scs.fsu.edu/
- Enter your SCS userid and password
- Select the Horde Application Mail to read your e-mail
USING Horde/IMP
Having logged in to IMP, you should now be looking at your Inbox screen.
This paragraph provides a summary of what you can do within IMP. Below is a listing of the various screens and their related functionality. Each screen is pretty intuitive and self-explanatory - you should not experience problems using them.
- Inbox - this lists all the messages in your inbox (double-click a message to open and read it).
- New Messages - use this to write and send messages (same concept as your normal e-mail client).
- Folders - use this to create and manage your mail folders (IMAP only).
- Options - use this to set up all your e-mail preferences.
- Search - use to search your mailboxes.
- Filters - use this to change your sieve filters.
- Logout - use this to log out of IMP when you're done using the system (securely logs you out of the system, taking you back to the login screen).
Notes
- Microsoft IE requires that you must enable sites/web servers. This usually isn't a problem until you attempt to send email.
- To fix the problem, go to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Sites/
- Add: http://webmail.scs.fsu.edu
- Click on Allow and then click on ok.
- Click on okay to exit Internet Options Tool.
- Apple Mac users may be unable to view the Webmail page using Internet Explorer. A newer browser that supports the security features of Webmail may be required. Mozilla and Safari are both known to work.
- Be aware that Folders created using the IMAP email protocol will not be available if you should change your mail protocol from IMAP to POP.
- You MUST use either IMAP OR POP, don't use both. You can cause major problems with your mailbox if you use both of them at the same time. While IMAP supports having mulitple clients using the same mailbox; POP does not. You can CORRUPT your mailbox if you have one client set to POP and another set to IMAP. IMP is an IMAP client. When you use IMP, do not open a local POP client!
What are IMAP and POP?
IMAP, also known as IMAP4, and POP, also known as POP3, are two Internet mail protocols which enable you to retrieve mail from an e-mail client. For example, from your local pc you may use Netscape Messenger or Microsoft Outlook to read your e-mail. IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol; POP stands for Post Office Protocol.
The IMAP protocol allows you to read your mail while it is still on the mail server. This allows you to keep your mail in a central location accessible from any IMAP-configured computer.
POP is different in that it downloads your mail to the PC, removing it entirely from the server. This is handy in that you can always read your downloaded mail on the PC, even if the network goes down. However, you won't be able to read your existing mail if you're at a different computer.
The table below summarizes some of the differences between IMAP and POP in order to help you choose which protocol is best for you.
Differences Between IMAP and POP
Question IMAP POP
What does it stand for? Internet Message Access Protocol Post Office Protocol
Are messages kept on the server? YES NO (by default)
Will my e-mail be backed up? YES. NO. By default, all messages are downloaded to your computer and deleted from the server. The best we can do with POP is to take a "snapshot" of what is on the server at a particular instance.
Can I access my mail from anywhere? YES. Since IMAP keeps all mail in a central location (the server), you can set up IMAP on multiple computers and always be able to see all your messages. NO. POP automatically downloads mail to the local computer, so if you try to set up POP on another computer, you won't be able to see old messages, and newer mail will be out of synch.
How fast is it? Faster: IMAP retrieves only the message headers when you check your mail; it doesn't retrieve the entire message until you actually read it. Slower: POP downloads every message in its entirety to your computer, which can take longer with large messages.
Can I filter my e-mail? YES: IMAP allows the flexibility to store messages in unique folders. NO: POP messages reside locally and you are limited in your options. You will need to create message filters on your local machine.
This protocol is suitable for... ... users who want access to all their mail from multiple computers or locations. ... users who access their mail from only one location.

Configuring Mail for SSL
To activate SSL for any existing POP or IMAP account: just call up the "Accounts" tab and then select "Options" tab in that account's setup dialog (which you can invoke via Mail's Preferences) and check the "Use SSL" checkbox.
If the value of the "Port" text field was already the default port number or POP or IMAP (110 and 143, respectively) then it will snap to the SSL-flavored default port for the same type of protocol (995 for POPS, 993 for IMAPS). If the field held any other value, though, Mail will figure that this mail server must have a penchant for unusual port numbering, and won't try guessing it. Use the default settings.
Mail is now configured to check your SCS e-mail using email.scs.fsu.edu.

Mail includes on-line help guides to assist you with address book creation and other aspects of reading email. Help is located under the Help menu. If you are experiencing application errors or crashes, please contact Apple for further support.

Please read General Instructions for SCS Email Migration (shown under General: Settings on the menu on the left-hand side of your screen) before proceeding with specific email client setup. Overview Pine® - a Program for Internet News and Email develop ed by the University of Washington. Pine works really well with POP protocol bu t is not very adept at handling folders that are usually associated with IMAP. In several trials where we tried to retain the users old email and add IMAP, the results were less than stellar. We recommend migrating to mutt if you prefer a character-based email client to use with IMAP. Configuration

Email Management
Note:Tthe websieve application is longer used and most of its functionality has been replaced by Horde.
Forwarding and set vacation
Setting a forwarding address and vaction behavior is handled with the filters option in Horde, this can be accomplished by
- Goto to (https://mail.scs.fsu.edu/)
- Login using your SCS assigned username and password
- Make sure that you are under the horde layout by clicking the Horde link in the left sidebar
- Both the vaction setting and forward settings should be available under the Filters group.
Storing/Archiving Mail
Migrate the messages you wish to keep, off of the mail server.
There are many possibilities for storing mail outside of the mail server. Most email clients provide a way to move messages to alternate folders or mailboxes, created on your local machine, on removable media (such as
CD-ROM), or in your home directory.
Quotas for Email Space
SCS email users are provided with 2GB of disk space on the mail server. (This is separate from the home directory or research disk space allocation.)
When a user's quota is exceeded, all incoming mail for that user is "bounced" back to the sender. You will not receive any more mail until you disk usage is back under your disk usage quota.
Checking status of email disk quota
One way a user can check their email quota status, is by accessing the HORDE Webmail interface on
http://email.scs.fsu.edu. When you login to this service, click on mail, your quota status is shown in a box at the top of the mail folder page.
Some mail clients (e.g., Mulberry) provide a feature for checking quotas. Check your client's documentation, or ask
ops@csit.fsu.edu for information.
