Disk Space Allocation

Quotas are imposed to help us maintain a healthy shared file system.

Account Type Quota
Administration 2GB (soft) / 2.5GB (hard)
Affiliated Facuty Members 5GB (soft) / 5.5GB (hard)
Class accounts 1GB (soft) / 1.25GB (hard)
Facuty members 11GB (soft) / 11.5GB (hard)
Graduate students 11GB (soft) / 11.5GB (hard)
Postdoctorates 11GB (soft) / 11.5GB (hard)
Project staff members 5GB (soft) / 5.5GB (hard)
Restricted users 1GB (soft) / 1.25GB (hard)
System accounts 5GB (soft) / 5.5GB (hard)
System administrators 11GB (soft) / 11.5 GB (hard)
Undergraduate students 6GB (soft) / 6.5GB (hard)
Visitors 1GB (soft) / 1.25GB (hard)

Quotas consist of two seperate components, a soft quota and a hard quota. A soft quota is the official quota that a user has based on their classification (e.g., faculty, postdoc, etc.). A soft quota can be exceeded. The hard quotas prevent an out of control process from completely filling up a disk volume, thereby limiting the impact a user can have on other users on the same disk volume. Write access to the disk is disabled anytime a user exceeds the hard quota.

Checking status of home directory disk quota

Quotas on home directories are monitored daily by the main fileserver. If you exceed your quota you will be sent notification by email. Additionally, the home directory quota status is displayed when you log into the following core machines.

  • PAMD Cluster
  • Dsk desktops
  • Hallway Machines
  • Classroom Machines

Scratch Space

Scratch space is available at /fs/scratch and /panfs/panasas1/scratch. No quotas are enforced on scratch space.

Files not accessed within 7 days are automatically deleted.

Quotas for Research Space

Storage quotas for research spaces are handled at a Group level and are set on a case-by-case basis. Send mail to ops@csit.fsu.edu to request research disk space.

Quotas for Email Space

SCS email users are provided with 2GB of disk space on the mail server. (This is separate from the home directory or research disk space allocation.)

When a user's quota is exceeded, all incoming mail for that user is "bounced" back to the sender. You will not receive any more mail until you disk usage is back under your disk usage quota.

Checking status of email disk quota

One way a user can check their email quota status, is by accessing the HORDE Webmail interface on http://email.scs.fsu.edu. When you login to this service, click on mail, your quota status is shown in a box at the top of the mail folder page.

Some mail clients (e.g., Mulberry) provide a feature for checking quotas. Check your client's documentation, or ask ops@csit.fsu.edu for information.

Requesting a Quota Increase

If you are frequently hitting the quota limits on a Research space, you can contact ops@csit.fsu.edu to request a quota extension. Depending on the volume where your home directory resides and the requested quota increase, it may be necessary to move your space or delay implementation until other spaces are moved.

Any project that requires more space than available in one research volume is a strong candidate for migration to a dedicated "research area" server. TSG can work with the Principal Investigator to consider alternatives in this case.
