REU Program 2005

JUNE 5 - JULY 29, 2005

Program Desription

REU stands for R esearch E xperience for U ndergraduates. It is a program in which students from universities throughout the USA visit FSU to participate in a program jointly sponsored by the NSF and the DoD. The program pays stipends, travel, and living expenses for students to work with various faculty members and Post Doctoral Research Associates at FSU for eight weeks during the summer semester. It is a program which provides a valuable educational experience for undergraduate students.

Students will work individually or in pairs on research projects in the general area of computational mathematics. The projects will involve using mathematics to help understand a variety of applications; each project will involve some programming and conducting numerical experiments.

A great way to learn more about how to use Twiki is to take the TwikiTutorial

Tips for running Amira

Log into a computer that has Amira loaded, start up Amira, and run the tutorial (found from the help menu). The hallway machines have Amira installed. These machines are named hallway-b through hallway-f)

Tips for running Maple

  • Maple may not be installed on your desktop. If that is the case, then you may run the program remotely
by logging into one of the following machines:
    • aspen, birch, hallway- a - hallway- f

Tips for running Matlab

Machines that have Matlab installed include

  • aspen, birch and olympus (Sun OS)
  • prism01, prism02, prism03, and prism04 {red hat linux)
  • hallway-a through hallway-f (red hat linux)

You may log into these machines remotely and run Matlab. If using Windows, you will need to make sure that your X-win32 is launched (requires no setup) and make sure your ssh tunneling is turned on.

Tips for running Tecplot on Zeus

Tecplot (version 7.0) is available using a network license on zeus - SGI O200.

  • Copy the file called "/usr/local/tecplot/tecplot.cfg" to your home directory and rename it to be: ".tecplot.cfg". This is a sample configuration file you may want to edit. Configuration file commands are discussed in the Tecplot User's Manual and the Tecplot Reference Manual.
  • On some machines you must make sure your XUSERFILESEARCHPATH or XENVIRONMENT environment variable contains your own home directory.
  • Edit your .cshrc or .profile file and set the TEC7HOME? environment variable to the full path of the Tecplot Home Directory (/usr/local/tecplot).
  • Add a path to the "bin" sub-directory (/usr/local/tecplot/bin) below the Tecplot Home Directory to your file path in your .cshrc or .profile file.
  • You are now ready to run Tecplot Version 7.
