Determination Annotations Quick Use Guide

With MorphBank version 2.5, one can Add Annotations to Images. You must be Logged In to do this and select a Group. While browsing Images, click on the clip_image002.gif (Annotate) icon to annotate an Image. If you are browsing Specimens and would like to annotate an image or images associated with a Specimen, first click on the clip_image002.jpg (Camera icon) for that Specimen. This will result in a screen showing all images (in Browse-Images) for that Specimen.

Click on the clip_image002.gif to annotate an individual image. If you wish to annotate all of these images, at the top of the page, click on the icon clip_image003.jpg and then select "Copy to a new collection" and click on clip_image004.jpg.

From the Top Menu bar, select Tools>Collection Manager. Here you can name the Collection you created and open it. In your collection you may Annotate an image or all the images or a subset. Again, click on the clip_image002.gif icon to Annotate a single image. Or if you wish to Annotate a group of images, place a check in the check box of each of those images and select "Annotate Checked Objects" from the Menu at the left of the screen.

There are 4 types of Annotations possible in MorphBank: General, Determination, Legacy and XML. Legacy Annotations are imported (not done on MorphBank); XML annotations will allow other types of data to be imported into Morphbank. General Annotations allow one to make comments about an image.

Determination Annotations concern the Taxonomic Name and Rank assigned to an Image in MorphBank. If you have clicked on clip_image002.gif to annotate an individual image you need to choose the Type of Annotation from the drop-down. By default, you are in the Determination Annotation Window. At the top of this screen you see Image Record followed by a link to the image you wish to Annotate. Example: Image Record [89289-Viola palmata]. Clicking on the 89289 will open a Viewer screen where you can get a detailed look at the image you are annotating using zoom in/out and rotate.

Next, you will see any Related Annotations that currently exist for the Image. At least one annotation there shows the Taxonomic Name and Rank currently assigned to this Image in MorphBank.

The Determination Action drop-down menu has 4 choices:
1) Agree choose name above [Agree with the current name]]
2) Disagree choose name above [Disagree with the current name]
3) Qualify lowest rank choose name above [Specify your level of certainty/uncertainty]
4) Give different name choose name below [Select a different name for Image]
Look at the Related Annotations section: Note the radio button just to the left of the Taxonomic Name. Click to fill that radio button if you wish to Agree with, Disagree with or Qualify one of the Related Annotations. In other words, if you are choosing 1, 2 or 3 above, use the radio button. If you wish to select a different Taxonomic Name for the image, Do Not click the radio button next to the currently assigned name. Instead you will will be choosing:
Determination Action: "Give different name-choose name below"
Then, you will need to Select the New Taxon from the Taxon Table. Click on the clip_image005.jpg (check mark) to the right of the New Taxon field. This opens the Taxonomic Tree. Click your way down through this tree to the Taxonomic Concept you are looking for and clip_image006.jpg it. It will then appear in the New Taxon field.
As you click down through the tree, if you cannot find the Taxonomic Name in the tree, please use the clip_image007.jpg link. See the MorphBank Twiki at https://www.scs.fsu.edu/twiki/bin/view/Main/NewTaxon for instructions on how to use the Add New Taxon form.

The Prefix and Suffix fields only appear if you are choosing to:
  • 3) Qualify Lowest Rank-choose name above or
  • 4) Give different name choose name below

The x/y coordinates for the Arrow will be saved. You may enter text in this field to indicate the significance of the Arrow you've placed.
