Sax

The Sax cluster was purchased through a DURIP grant from Army, entitled "A Laboratory for Distributed and Grid Computing" and awarded to Michael Mascagni and Ashok Srinivasan. The cluster is used to develop Monte Carlo algorithms and software tools for distributed and grid-type computing environments. Monte Carlo is known for its high parallelization efficiency. The aim of this project, therefore, is to (i) develop effective Monte Carlo algorithms for a wider variety of problems, and (ii) to develop tools that enable easier use of Monte Carlo techniques on such environments.

The current hardware configuration consists of the following:

  • 1 head node configured with:
    • 2 Gigabytes of RAM
    • 2 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 2GHzs
    • 67 GB for home directories exported to compute nodes
    • 688 GB of scratch exported to computer nodes
    • Single Gigabit Ethernet interface
  • 33 compute nodes configured with:
    • 2 Gigabyte of RAM
    • 2 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 2GHz
    • Approximately 40 GB of local disk space
    • Single Gigabit Ethernet interface
