Computing at SCS FAQ

General frequently asked questions about using SCS's computing resources.

Why doesn't my VPN connection to SCS allow connections to other protected FSU resources?
For technical reasons relating to the FSU wireless system, the VPN is configured to route ONLY traffic destined for SCS (144.174.x.x) over the VPN tunnel. All other traffic will originate from the machine you are working on, NOT from the VPN IP address.

How can I get an account on a research cluster?
To get an account on any of the research clusters you will need to contact the resource owner. There are other ways to run jobs on the research clusters, however. For example, you can submit a job using Condor from the phoenix? cluster. Jobs submitted using condor will be migrated to the parts of the research clusters not used by the primary resource owner.

Why can't I see my home directory from fshome on the compute node?
The compute nodes are designed to be efficient and independent of outside resources like fs (the main file server). By design, you can only access your home file space on SCS clusters from the head node. Users should copy any required applications from fshome to their local directory on the cluster resource head node for use within that cluster.

Why can't I ssh to prism?
Prism is a general access application server. You will need to use the qlogin from an SCS managed desktop (e.g., dskscs***.scs.fsu.edu) or from pamd.scs.fsu.edu. See PrismCluster? for more information.

How do I setup my spam filters to reject spam?
Login to horde, from the front page, click on the tab with the word Filters. (This is also accessible from Mail->Filters.) This will take you to a page where you can add filtering rules. Click on New Rule. For the filter name type Spam, the checkbox for All of the following should be selcted.
